If you need to dispose of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) you need to make sure that you have followed the correct procedures prior to their removal.

There are four main levels of information, instruction and training. These relate to:

  • Asbestos awareness

  • Non-licensable work with asbestos

  • Notifiable Non Licenced Work (NNLW)

  • Licensable work with asbestos.

Asbestos awareness

This is intended to give workers and supervisors the information they need to avoid work that may disturb asbestos during their normal work. It will not prepare you for work with asbestos-containing materials. If you are planning to carry out work that will disturb ACMs, further information, instruction and training will be needed.

Non-licensable work including NNLW

Workers who may need this level of information, instruction and training include those listed under asbestos awareness above and whose work will require them to disturb asbestos-containing materials such as those detailed within the Asbestos Essentials section of the HSE web site.

Licensable work with asbestos

Work with higher risk asbestos-containing materials must be carried out by HSE licensed contractors only.

More information about what level of training is needed is here.
